Our History

“Because education is a labor of love and demands from the educator
to do and teach, to set an example by word, life and doctrine.”

(Ms Gilda Tonini)

These inspiring words from Ms. Gilda Tonini Burgueño reflect the dedication to fully commit to the education of students. Since its inception, our school has charted its course over four decades, graduating 31 generations of men and women capable of contributing to a better world.

Our journey began in the Providencia neighborhood, at Luis Thayer Ojeda 587, in March 1984 with a total of 74 students, establishing a family-oriented, Catholic-inspired school.

Soon the demand from families eager to be part of our community grew and so in 1989 our ship set sail for a new port, located at Avenida Las Condes 12167, where we stayed for 26 years with approximately 1,000 voyagers.

Since 1989 the school’s infrastructure has been continuously developed in line with pedagogical and technological advancements.

The prestige of The Mayflower School during its first decade led to its integration into various associations that continue to this day, such as the Association of British Schools in Chile (ABSCh), Latin American Heads Conference (LAHC), International Baccalaureate® (IB), and Federation of Private Education Institutions (FIDE).

The waters navigated by our ship have traversed not only academic routes but also extracurricular ones, which are fundamental for the holistic development of a human being. Among these, we can mention the Christopher Jones Cup athletics championship, the Drama Spring Break theater festival, the Maystock music festival, the Outdoor Education program, Scouts, Missions, Creativity, Action, and Service (CAS), and the Healthy Lifestyle and Environmental Awareness program, among others.

The community spirit envisioned by Ms. Gilda includes the teaching staff, administrative personnel, support staff, students, and parents. In 1995, the first student council was established, and in 2006, the first parents' association was formed.

After 26 years, our ship began to chart new courses, embarking on a new adventure that in 2015 took us from the port of Las Condes to the pre-cordilleran foothills of Lo Barnechea, where 6 hectares now house our current campus at Camino de Laguna 13.675.

It has been 9 years since we arrived at our new home, where we have welcomed a significant number of new families into our community. In this adventure, educational demands have evolved, and we are proud to say that we are an IB World School offering the full continuum of IB programs (Primary Years Programme, Middle Years Programme, and Diploma Programme).

Similarly, we have updated our Institutional Educational Project to meet the challenges of the new times, but our essence endures, always maintaining the original ideal of building a great Mayflower family, where each member feels motivated and willing to contribute their best to work as a team, thus forming the spirit of the school that characterizes us.

Origin of Our Name

On August 15, 1620, the vessel named Mayflower, commanded by Christopher Jones, set sail from the port of Southampton, England, carrying a group of families who, filled with faith in God, optimism, courage, hope, and enthusiasm, sought to live out their own spirituality and dreamt of a better future in a new land.

The great values that inspired the crew and passengers of this ship provided immense strength to overcome the challenges they would face on their long and perilous journey.

The faith and confidence in a successful future strengthened this vessel. It was not easy; the force of storms, harsh weather, and significant structural damage presented major obstacles that needed to be overcome. However, these challenges were not enough to prevent the Mayflower from achieving its goal and bringing its passengers to their destination, arriving after 66 days at Plymouth, Massachusetts, the land they had longed for.

Just as the families who set sail on the Mayflower were imbued with values that gave them the strength to overcome the challenges they faced, this school community is also guided by values that provide the resilience needed to navigate the obstacles that arise.

Today, as heirs to the bold spirit of our founder, we embark on an educational journey filled with challenges but driven by the joy of realizing what we have always dreamed of. Just as the vessel of old fulfilled its mission, our commitment is to guide those who place their trust in us to a safe harbor, contributing to their personal, social, and cultural development, inspired by Christian values.
